Top 5 Most Expensive NFTs

Non-fungible Tokens (NFT) are taking the world by storm. A 319 gig JPEG by the artist Mike Winkelmann, famously known by the mononym Beeple, was sold for a mind-blowing price this week. Now, the word NFT is buzzing all over the internet.

Non-fungible tokens are blockchain-backed crypto-asset that turns digital art into unique, one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable, non-interchangeable, collectibles that ensure ownership of only one buyer at a time. All the transaction history is kept in the digital ledger. Verifiable digital ownership creates value for the NFTs.

From NBA highlights to billionaire Mark Cuban quotes, to the Hollywood artists and the Youtubers, and of course Elon Musk – who hasn’t joined the trend?

NFT market value has ballooned from $40 million to more than $330 in just a couple of years. Newer records of selling prices are being set every week. Let’s take a look at what’s going on.

Here is a top 5 list of the most expensive NFTs till today-

1.    Everyday: The First 5000 Days - $69 Million

The record-smashing NFT sale occurred at an online auction. The historical auction house Christie’s had set an auction for a digital collage art by Beeple. The artwork is titled ‘The first 5,000 Days’. The image is a collage of 5000 images. Mike Winkelmann has been uploading artwork every day since 2007. Finally, in the age of the tech boom, he has decided to cash in. His work has a touch of futuristic pop-culture reference with a hint of Earth-like alien worlds.

2.   Cryptopunk #3100 - $7.58 Million

Before Beeple, Cryptopunks held the crown. Just a day before People's, Cryptopunk #3100 was sold for around $7.58 million.

Cryptopunks are 24* 24-pixel arts developed by a New York-based software firm Larva Labs. In 2017, the company digitally created 10,000-pixel arts, all of which are unique. Most of the characters are punk-themed human characters. Each character holds a unique look. Since then, Larva Labs has sold all of the Cryptopunks NFTs. They are only available in the marketplace now.

On March 11, Cryptopunk #3100 was sold for 4000 Ether, which amounts to $7.58 Million, breaking the record set the previous day. Reportedly, the NFT was originally acquired with $21000.

3.   Cryptopunk #7804 - $7.57 Million

Before losing the crown to #3100, a pipe-smoking pixel punk character broke the headlines all over the world, when it was sold for $7.57 million. It was also sold for 4000 ETH. The difference occurs due to the rising price of ETH. The first buyer had bought the character for 12 ETH or $15k in 2018.

Just a month ago, Cryptopunk #6965 was setting the record with $1.5 million price tag. How fast things escalate.

4.   Beeple’s Crossroads -  $6.6 Million

Another one of Beeple’s work was sold for the price of $6.6 million at the digital marketplace Nifty Gateway. This time it was a resale. The seller bought the artwork name ‘Crossroads’ in late 2020 for $66,000 dollars, peanut compared to the selling price of 6.6m, earning him a profit of 100x. The work ‘Crossroads’ was drawn in the context of the US Election 2020.

5.   Jack Dorsey - $2.5 Million

Twitter co-founder and CEO, Jack Dorsey, has put his first-ever tweet as NFT to be sold in the crypto market. The auction is yet to be closed. However, the tweet has already seen the highest bid of $2.5 million. It will be interesting to see the closing price. The auction will close on 21, March 2021.
